Rep. George Santos spoke to the press after he was indicted on 13 counts of financial crimes and pleaded not guilty. Santos claimed the charges were part of a "witch hunt."

The charges allege that Santos used political contributions to line his pockets, unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits that should have gone to New Yorkers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and lied to the House of Representatives about his education and financial status.

If convicted, Santos faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison on each count of wire fraud and money laundering, and 10 years in prison on each count of theft of public funds and making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

Santos has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His trial is scheduled to begin on January 10, 2024.
