Right-wing political commentators, and even some skeptics, constantly claim that Muslims are using taqiyyah - that they're lying. What they don't realize is that taqiyyah is not a common or well known concept in Islam. Some Shias practice it for self-preservation, but that's about it. I've heard some non-Muslims constantly call taqiyyah a command of sacred deception. They're either misinformed, or flirting with bigotry in those statements. What is taqiyyah? I explain that here, as to correct any under-informed people, or any anti-Muslim bigots in my audience.

Islam deserves criticism, but essentially calling all Muslims liars is not an acceptable approach.
