Crash Bandicoot is a platform video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1996 for the PlayStation console. It is the first episode of the Crash Bandicoot series.

The story of Crash Bandicoot is about the creation of the anthropomorphic Crash Bandicoot, the game's eponymous hero, by Doctor Neo Cortex and Doctor Nitrus Brio, the game's two main antagonists. Crash then makes it his mission to stop his two creators in their quest for world domination, reverse all the pollution they caused, and save his friend Tawna, a female bandicoot also created by Doctors Cortex and Brio.

Crash Bandicoot received generally positive reviews. Critics praise the game's computer graphics, with its visually unique style, but note the lack of innovation in the platform video game regime. The game became the eighth best-selling game for the PlayStation console, with 6.82 million copies sold and being the first entry in such a successful series. Naughty Dog's game also became the first Western title to pass 500,000 copies sold in Japan, before being overtaken by its two sequels, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.
