Engine removal on an Ericson 39! Getting ready for our electric motor. S1 Ep13

When Phillip and I bought Kalamazoo we had very small plans for her. It was only supposed to be a few months and then moving into a new house and *maybe* keeping the boat. Instead, we started down a path that completely altered our plans and dreams of what the future would be for us. One of the big defining moments was when our one cylinder Yanmar engine started to burn oil and ran away with us. We had been following a few sailing channels at that point and knew that an electric motor was a viable option. Especially since we had plans to mostly day sail and maybe add in a few longer trips.

We. Fell. In. Love.

Not only was it easy to maintain, it was not stinky, loud, or confusing. Phillips an engineer by trade to diesel is not his forte. Electricity however, makes perfect sense to him. When we were looking for our next boat, we knew, without a doubt, that we wanted to go electric again. We were not picky on what type of motor a new boat would have, because we knew that we would be getting rid of it. This Atomic 4 ran like a champ from Waukegan to Holland, but it just wasn't our style.
