Open Your Eye Ep74 with guest Allan Finney

Allan Finney from Ayahuasca Canada joins Kim & Tarra for a chat on NOK Network
The ayahuasca ritual has “an extraordinary cultural history” with “religious, therapeutic and culturally affirmative” properties.
In Canada participating in this “extraordinary cultural history” is a criminal act that somehow poses a threat to Canadian society. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Culture ayahuasca is “a fundamental pillar of the identity of the Amazonian people.”
Allan Finney first started taking ayahuasca in Peru with lineage Shipibo shamans on two month-long retreats. He then started working with a Shipibo-trained shaman in Canada and started assisting in ceremonies. A further month-long trip to Peru added to his experience with the Shipibo traditions.
“In Canada the issue of legality prevents a lot of people from experiencing this medicine for themselves,” he said. “There are many people that could benefit from the medicine such as first-responders or soldiers with PTSD but because of their job, they can’t or won’t risk a criminal conviction.”
Right now, the only way to access traditional Shipibo ceremonies in Canada is in underground, illegal ceremonies. The Companionship of the Sacred Vine was set up as an umbrella organization for facilitators to set up legal centers in Canada, free from state prosecution.
According to Finney “You can call it a religious right or a human right, the fact is this is a sacred traditional medicine that should be available to people without the threat of prosecution.”
“When I looked at the history of how ayahuasca was criminalized in Canada and around the world, it quickly became apparent to me that this is another attempt by the authorities to outlaw a very useful plant medicine,” he said.
Allen does not consider this a “war on drugs,” he feels it is a "war on my right to my own consciousness and for me to decide for myself how I want to conduct my spiritual life.”
Allan Finney says he poses absolutely no danger to anyone in Canada or to himself utilizing ancient sacred medicines.. Ayahuasca is inherently safe he says. "The state has no business rummaging around in my head" Finney maintains.
