#PhoenixPolice shoot and kill a man over a stolen soundbar?

On May 9th at approximately 7:30 p.m., Tempe Police dispatch broadcasted an Attempt to Locate regarding a shoplifting that had just occurred at the Wal-Mart located at 1380 W. Elliot Rd. The suspect was described as a Native American male in his mid-20's. Additional information was provided to our dispatch and broadcasted that employees at the store tried stopping the suspect; however, he refused to comply and fled the scene on foot. The suspect reportedly had stolen a soundbar and shortly after was observed near a canal path as officers checked the area. The officer found him walking along a nearby canal path behind the Wal- Mart (Highline Canal and Grove Parkway). A physical confrontation occurred between the officer and the suspect, and an officer- involved shooting occurred. The suspect was provided medical treatment at the scene by officers and transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Officers did locate a sharp object near the suspect's body. No officers or citizens were injured during the incident. The officer involved in the shooting is a 20-year veteran ofthe department and his Body Worn Camera was activated during the incident. In accordance with departmental policy the officer was placed on administrative leave, It is important to note that Detectives are actively attempting to identify the suspect and their immediate family prior to any identification being confirmed. Currently, this is an on- going investigation and we do not have any additional details to provide.
