Unveiling the 50c Party: How the Chinese Communist Party Uses Internet Propaganda

The 五毛黨 or the Fifty Cent Party is a colloquial term used on the Chinese Internet to refer to commenters trying to manipulate public opinion. Despite it being widely known that such posting and commenting efforts exist, who they actually are, what they actually do and what their goals are is not all that well explored. Like with many aspects of the CCP, that lack of transparency has led to wild speculation and just random assumptions. So I was intrigued to come across a 2016 paper using hacked emails to pull back the veil on this CCP practice.
