This is an archive channel, i'm not the owner of the content, check the link in the end. Chiang Ching-Kuo was the former President of Taiwan, son of Chiang Kai-Shek and the man who largely ushered Taiwan towards democracy

I recently finished reading the book the “Generalissimo’s Son” by Jay Taylor, one of the few full English-language biographies about him. I found it an educational book with many unique stories about the former President as well as Taiwan’s rocky transition throughout the 1980s.

In this video, I bring up a few thoughts I had upon reflecting about the man’s long and eventful life. He had become Chiang Kai-Shek’s sole heir, followed him throughout the reunification of China, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the loss of the Chinese Civil War before eventually taking control of the country on his own upon the death of his father in 1975.

About a decade later, Chiang Ching-kuo gave up power and converted Taiwan into a democracy. He did not create a dynasty. He did deepen the societal divides in his country. Instead, he brought the Taiwanese majority into the political fold and had them empower his own party. For that it seems like its people - depending on whom you ask - give him either begrudging credit or great admiration.
