The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which constantly monitors the sun, captured images of the flare. Solar flares are intense eruptions of energy that release radiation. While the harmful radiation from a flare is unable to pass through Earth's atmosphere and directly affect humans, it can interfere with the atmosphere's layer where GPS and communication signals travel, especially if the flare is powerful enough.
