Altered Beast, is an Arcade Beat 'em up game, developed and published by SEGA in 1988, whose development was headed by Makoto Uchida, who had in Altered Beast, his first project as leader of a development team. Being a game that, despite being famous for coming along with the Mega Drive. It was actually a hit in the arcades, being ported to numerous platforms. Among the Master System, NES and Game Gear. In addition to having and winning a version for the Playstation 2 in January 2005.
The game's plot is simple, whose basic premise is that Neff (a demonic deity and ruler of the underworld) captures the Goddess Athena. Then, angry, Zeus himself, lord of Olympus, and father of Athena. Decides to choose a champion to save her. and then, respecting the bravery of the Roman Centurions, Zeus resurrects one of them, and gives him powers, that he may be his champion. And descend to the deepest levels of the underworld, to rescue the goddess.

We have a classic side-scrolling beat 'em up, with some platforming elements. Featuring 5 levels set in Ancient Greece, populated by all sorts of strange creatures. Which can be faced by up to two simultaneous players. Which they will observe, after each time they overcome the Neff (transformed into some creature). Small cut scenes, showing the dangers faced by Athena.

The commands are equally simple: punch, kick, and jump. And every time the player kills a two-headed white wolf, there will be a power-up. Including, and with 3 of them, the character transforms into a powerful bestial being. With your skills greatly increased, to face Neff until the end of the phase.

Beasts include, in addition to the legendary werewolf, which illustrates the game's arts, and its golden version, as well as dragon, bear and tiger, each beast offering new mechanics and unique abilities. Already in the NES port, there was a lot of creative license, and we could also transform into a lion, a shark, and a phoenix.

In the original arcade version, the end credits reveal that the entire game was a re-enactment rather than a battle between magical creatures. It was all just an actor, playing the hero, and facing stunt doubles. While the special effects delivered the transformations and magical abilities.
