Is Judas the son of perdition?

Although a good case could be made for Judas being the son of perdition, there is not one direct reference to him being so.
John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

“While I was with them in the world” could be a reference to the disciples but it could also mean all of those He was with including everybody that had believed upon Him while He was in His carnal body because He said “in the world”. He kept those that God had given Him but only the ones that were truly saved and not one was lost but only the son of perdition.
Then, He goes on to say “that the scripture might be fulfilled”.

If you look at the literal meaning of the word “perdition” it means a literal destruction or perishing, to utterly destroy. If Judas was fulfilling the scriptures why would he be sentenced to death? Why would our Father sentence Judas to death if he was fulfilling His pre ordained plan of salvation? It doesn’t make any sense. Also, when you look at the other times the word “perdition” is used it denotes the same thing; destruction, ruin and perishing.

We have three examples that directly point to satan as being the son of perdition and they are 2 Thessalonians 2:3, Revelation 17:8 and 17:11. Also we know that satan is the only entity that has been sentenced to death for his rebellion against God in Revelation 12:4. I believe the trial is mentioned in;

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
The chronology in Job 1 jumps around a lot and it has to be rightly divided.

With that in mind we can only come to two conclusions; “the son of perdition” in John 17:12 is not literal but figurative if it is actually referring to Judas. Second, Jesus is actually referring to satan because he is really the only entity that has already been sentenced to perish but it hasn’t been carried out until after the GWTJ. In that sense, he is the only one who has been “lost”.
To those of you who claim that 2 Thessalonians 2:3 is Judas because of John 17:12, you are sadly mistaken.

Further evidence of Judas not being the son of perdition
He did not commit suicide by hanging himself; he literally choked on his own grief.
His bowels gushed out on the ground because he had help. The so called religious leaders could not allow him to expose them so they sliced him from his neck to his groin and his guts fell out on the ground. He was murdered and not by his own hand.

The word “hanged” as it is used here is rare. When looked at in context with Acts 1:18 it is not a literal hanging but a choking on his own grief for what he had done to his Lord.
Hanged G # 519 apagchó: to strangle, hang oneself Original Word: ἀπάγχω
Part of Speech: Verb Transliteration: apagchó
Phonetic Spelling: (ap-ang'-khom-ahee)
Definition: to strangle, hang oneself
Usage: I choke, strangle; mid: I strangle or hang myself.

There is no doubt in my mind Judas knew the Lord was savior but yet he was influenced by satan to betray Him. Yet nothing has taken our God by surprise and Judas was God’s vessel to accomplish His will. Just as Peter denied our Lord 3 times but was brought back into the flock…was Judas also? The fact that Judas took the silver back and threw it on the floor tells me he was remorseful.
No doubt Chiapas was behind his murder which is another clue to Judas’ change of heart

As found in Matthew 27:3 according to Dr. Strong
Repented G # 3338 metamelomai: to regret, repent-Original Word: μεταμέλομαι Part of Speech: Verb Transliteration: metamelomai
Phonetic Spelling: (met-am-el'-lom-ahee) Definition: to regret, repent
Usage: (lit: I change one care or interest for another), I change my mind (generally for the better), repent, regret.

We can only speculate what was in Judas’ heart but we know what is in the heart of satan
Evidence that Judas didn’t actually hang himself below

Matthew 27:3Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
Judas repented
Acts 1: 16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
18 Now this man purchased a field (potter’s field) with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

(satan mentioned above and below)
Revelation 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

No evidence of perdition found in Judas’ name either

Active participle of apollumi; a destroyer (i.e. Satan) -- Apollyon. see GREEK apollumi

The most telling evidence of course is the word perdition. It is one of satans names, Apollyon the destroyer that corresponds with 2 Thessalonians. Judas is never directly called the son of perdition but satan is. I have counted 33 names roles titles that satan is called.

The reason I gave the scriptures with the word perdition in them was for context. The key to understanding is found in the word Perdition itself. We can only speculate what was in Judas’ heart but we know what is in the heart of satan. I believe Judas repented and along with the other evidence we have we can only come to one conclusion as to who the literal son of perdition is.
Only one verse could be construed as pointing to Judas as the son of perdition in an indirect way but we have many that point directly to satan as being the son of perdition.
