Former United States President Donald Trump’s lawyer has called a rape and defamation case brought against him by writer E Jean Carroll an affront to the justice system. During closing arguments in a civil trial in Manhattan federal court, lawyer Joseph Tacopina urged jurors to reject Carroll’s effort to “profit” from a false story. Carroll has accused Trump of raping her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1995 or 1996 and defaming her by denying it happened. Trump has denied the allegations and accused Carroll of making up the story to boost sales of her 2019 memoir. Subscribe for more content like this.

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, argued that a 2005 Access Hollywood video in which Trump boasts about grabbing women “by the p***y” bolsters her client’s claim, along with other women who have accused him of sexual assault. Kaplan claimed that Trump’s behaviour was exactly what brought them to court. She played jurors a video of Trump’s October deposition in the case, where he mistook a photo of Carroll for his second wife, Marla Maples, before his lawyer corrected him.
