Republicans Only Care About Mental Health When It’s A Gun Debate Distraction

In an interview with Fox News' Shannon Bream, Abbott was asked about recent polling that showed overwhelming support for gun reform measures in the wake of the shooting in Allen, Texas, that killed two people and injured several others.

"We need to do more to address the root causes of violence," Abbott said. "We need to do more to address mental health issues."

However, some critics have pointed out that Abbott's focus on mental health issues is a way to distract from the issue of gun control. They argue that Republicans only care about mental health when it is used as a way to avoid talking about gun control.

For example, in 2019, after the shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, Abbott said that the shooting was "not about guns" but was "about a broken heart." He also said that the shooter was "mentally ill" and that he "needed help."

Critics point out that Abbott has not done anything to address the issue of mental health in Texas. They argue that he is using the issue of mental health as a way to avoid talking about gun control.
