He left but is coming back (The talents/10 gold coins Matthew 25:14-30)
There is a famous scene from the 1980’s blockbuster film, The Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger with his strong accent looks into the camera and simply said, “I’ll be back.” The Terminator wanted to let the individuals he was speaking to at the police station that he would be back, and they would not like it when it returned, as later in the movie he drives a car through the front of the police station. The point I am trying to make is that he said he was coming back, and he did exactly what he said he would do and came back. Today we begin to look at the parable of the talents from Matthew 25:14-30 and we see that Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven as a man who leaves his servants in charge as he goes on a journey. He gives them stewardship over what is his while he is away and gives each of them some money to manage for him while he is away. He expects those left to be responsible with what he has left them and conduct business on his behalf. The parable says that when he returns, he finds two of the workers had done a great job and doubled his investments while one of the workers had done nothing with what he was left with and simply hid it. The master rewarded the two good stewards and punished the lazy steward who did nothing with what he was left.
I believe a lot of people are going to be in for a rude awakening when they open their eyes in eternity and realize that God expected a return on the talents that He had given them. When Jesus ascended to Heaven, He promised that He would return and many of His parables deal with the idea of will those he is returning for be ready or caught off God. Jesus has left His church with the stewardship of His ministry while He is gone AND when He does returns, He will hold His servants accountable for what they did while He was gone. So many think that a relationship with Jesus is showing up to church when it is convenient, and they never get involved and work to expand His Kingdom. They never take stewardship of what He has left in their hands, and they never begin to conduct business on His behalf. When the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in the heart of someone who accepts Jesus Christ there should be a change and there should be a driving force within us to add to God’s Kingdom. Compassion and love should fill our hearts and we can not stand to see our friends, neighbors, and loved ones walk into eternity without knowing Jesus Christ. We should want them to experience the same peace and freedom that we now have through Jesus Christ. We must realize that Jesus said He would return, He will return, and when He does return, He will judge the work of His servants.
