chil e right wins
CHILE: Right-wing parties won the election for Chile's Constituent Council, with more than 95% of the votes counted. The new council will have 50 people and will be responsible for drafting the new Chilean Constitution.
The data are from the country's election body. With more than 95% of the votes counted, the Republican Party, considered far-right and led by former conservative presidential candidate José Antonio Kast, was in the lead, with 35.5% of the votes.
With that, Kast's party won more than two-fifths of the available council seats. Added to the votes won by Chile Seguro – a coalition of the traditional right, which won 21.1% of the votes – the right-wing parties gained control over the discussion of the new regiment.
“Today is the first day of a better future, a new beginning for Chile,” said Kast. With this maneuver, the right-wing takes control to define what the new Constitution will look like in place of all left-wing organizations, as was previously being planned by Allied unions.
