Mary Barthelson is a local advocate for the unhoused and low-income families in Fairfax County, and a dedicated promoter of STEM education and supporter of refugees. Born and raised in Fairfax, Virginia, Mary graduated as the class salutatorian from high school in Haymarket and went on to complete her bachelor's and master's degrees in systems engineering at George Mason University. With nearly a decade of experience working with cutting-edge technology in the space industry, coupled with several years of experience in security technology, Mary has established herself as a skilled and versatile engineer, currently serving as a Principal Systems Engineer at SAIC, where she is responsible for designing the architecture of space systems.

As the State and Local Policy Director of Reston Strong, Mary played a critical role in raising awareness of the rising number of tent communities in recent years and advocated for effective policy solutions in Fairfax County. She also led various community projects for Reston Strong, including sponsoring prom dresses for South Lakes High School, distributing holiday meals for food-insecure elementary school students, and organizing a peaceful demonstration for Black Lives Matter, which drew over 2,000 people.

Mary is running for Virginia House of District 7 and in this episode, we talk to her about her platform and policy positions, including her efforts to address the pressing issue of tent communities and homelessness, establish a mobile mental health unit in Reston to improve the response time of emergency mental health services, promote sustainable energy and STEM education, and combat the spread of false and misleading information. She also shares her vision for a more sustainable and equitable future that protects communities from being disproportionately and negatively burdened by energy infrastructure.
