Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (ソニック・ザ·ヘッジホッグ3 Sonikku za Hejjihoggu Suri?) is a video game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Mega Drive as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was released on February 2, 1994. The game is a direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2: in it, Dr. Eggman, the Death Egg, lands on Angel Island, a floating island, and Sonic and Tails must follow him there. There, the duo must once again retrieve the Chaos Emeralds to stop the Death Egg's re-release, while also facing off against the Master Emerald's guardian, Knuckles the Echidna.

After Sonic defeats Dr. Robotnik at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, his space station, the Death Egg, crash lands on a mystical floating archipelago called Angel Island. When Robotnik starts repairing the damaged station, he teams up with Knuckles the Echidna. Knuckles is the last surviving member of an ancient echidna civilization that once inhabited the island (which would later appear in Sonic Adventure), as well as the guardian of the Master Emerald, which controls the Chaos Emeralds and grants the energy that makes the island float.

Knowing that Sonic and Tails will try to track him down and realizing that he can use the Master Emerald to power the station, Robotnik tricks Knuckles into saying that Sonic is trying to steal the Master Emerald. Shortly after, Sonic and Tails in their biplane, the Tornado, are in pursuit of Robotnik. Sonic, possessing the emeralds from the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, transforms into Super Sonic. As soon as they arrive, Knuckles ambushes Sonic underground and hits him, making the Chaos Emeralds fall and Sonic returns to his normal appearance. Knuckles steals the Emeralds and disappears inside. Sonic and Tails travel through the levels to stop Robotnik, but they frequently run into Knuckles, who hampers their progress with various traps.

At the Launch Base Zone, Sonic uses a spare Egg-O-Matic to travel to the Death Egg, only to find Knuckles on a rafter. As usual, Knuckles tries to stop Sonic, but is defeated when the Death Egg's relaunch causes the beam Knuckles was standing on to collapse, causing the echidna to fall into the water. Sonic continues to a deck above the Death Egg, where he fights and defeats Robotnik's Big Arm machine. The Death Egg becomes damaged and falls out of orbit, after which it explodes.
