Plotinus was a Hellenistic Platonist philosopher born and raised in Roman Egypt. Plotinus is considered the originator of Neoplatonism by current scholars. Ammonius Saccas, a Platonist and self-taught philosopher, was his mentor.
The term "Neoplatonism" was developed by 19th-century historians to refer to Plotinus and his philosophy, which had a tremendous impact on Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance.
Much of what we know about Plotinus' life comes from Porphyry's introduction to his edition of Plotinus' most famous book, The Enneads. Plotinus discussed the One, the Intellect, and the Soul in his metaphysical writings as three basic ideas.
His writings have been influential for hundreds of years on Pagan, Jewish, Christian, Gnostic, and early Islamic metaphysicians and mystics. For example, his work on the duality of the One in two metaphysical states has influenced mainstream theological ideas in religions.
