Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ2 Sonikku za Hejjihoggu Tsū?) is a platform video game developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Mega Drive. It is the second game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series for the said console. Introduced the protagonist's friend, Miles "Tails" Prower, controllable by a second player. In the story, Sonic and Tails must stop the series' antagonist, Dr. Eggman, from stealing the Chaos Emeralds to power his space station, the Death Egg.

Development began in November 1991. Its team was composed of Japanese and Americans, unlike the first game in the franchise, which was produced only by Japanese. The game was directed by Masaharu Yoshii and produced by Shinobu Toyoda. Game design was led by Hirokazu Yasuhara, and music was composed by Masato Nakamura.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sold over six million copies, making it the second best-selling Mega Drive game, behind only the first game in the franchise. It is cited as one of the greatest video games of all time, receiving praise for its level design, visuals, and music, although its multiplayer mode was criticized. It was re-released on multiple platforms; a remastered version developed using the Retro Engine was released for iOS and Android in December 2013. Two direct sequels were made: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, released in 1994.
Plot

While traveling in his Tornado, Sonic crash-lands on West Side Island. After a few days, he notices that he is being followed by a two-tailed fox. He tries to run away, but the fox swings its tails like a helicopter to reach the hedgehog. Sonic is impressed with her ability, and lets her join him. The fox introduces himself as Miles Prower, better known as Tails.[1]

A few days later, Sonic and Tails hear an explosion in the center of the island. The great forest was destroyed and robots surrounded the area. Sonic knew what it was: Dr. Eggman was back, and decided to use the power of the Chaos Emeralds again, to propel the Death Egg, a space station the size of a moon. Sonic and Tails set out to locate the emeralds before Eggman does.
