Chechnya is a republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia that has a long history of conflict and violence. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Chechnya has fought two wars with Russia for its independence, which resulted in massive casualties and human rights violations on both sides. The current leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, is a former rebel who switched sides and pledged loyalty to the Kremlin in 1999, following his father Akhmad Kadyrov, who was assassinated in 2004.
