Army Stories : Advice for New Lieutenants

The advice is:

* The Army does not need lieutenants. It needs captains.
* Learn everything about your platoon, then learn about the missions of your company and battalion.
* Be physically fit. Find something you are good at and be the guy or gal who excels at that particular discipline (Marathon/CrossFit/Martial Arts/Powerlifting).
* Be yourself. The soldiers know when you are pretending.
* Don't use rank to get out of work.
* Suck up knowledge from your platoon sergeants, but know when they are being shady.
* Take care of yourself first.
* Ask questions, especially of privates who want to tell you what they know.
* Buy and learn how to use an M18 or M17 pistol.
* Inspect and perform layouts of everything you sign for
* Don't get into relationships with anyone on post - ideally within 25 miles of post.
* Personal relationships matter more than professional relationships.
* Be good and early with paperwork.
* Don't drink or gamble with Joe. Don't take from Joe.
* Don't display political opinions to your subordinates.
