LEYENDA (Legend)

Silvio Rodríguez

At dawn
some eyes were already from obscurity
and fled to yesterday’s darkness
with a handful of seeds to sow
with a handful of promises to grow…
… and love.

But the sun rose,
and rose above the earth ever higher,
drying the nocturnal cold, giving warmth,
rejoicing the world with its lavishness,
uprighting in the wind a powerful heart…
… of love.

And its light rose
jumping the mountains, traversing the sea,
bathing the world with its warm truth,
its warm reason,
spreading clarity, like a season.

Beautiful was the sun,
that kept rising over the world, ever higher,
with its banishment of snows, its song,
its seedbed in joyous awakening
upright to the wind the powerful heart…
… of love.

And its light reached,
to the dark kingdom, to the towers of yesterday,
and the unrelenting seed of its love, felt itself reborn
to the touch of its warmth and its works.

Then at the end,
at the time in which dusk was supposed to come,
they felt the light remaining in its breathing,
like a blood of the atmosphere, a force,
an eternal pact with sunlight…
… with sunlight… with being.
