Sonic the Hedgehog (Japanese: ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu?) is a platform video game produced by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It was originally released in North America in June 1991 and in the PAL region the following month. The game follows the story of the anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic on his quest to defeat Doctor Eggman, a scientist who imprisoned animals in robots and stole the magical Chaos Emeralds. Sonic the Hedgehog's gameplay involves collecting rings as a way to earn lives and a simple control scheme, with jumps and attacks controlled by a single button.

Development began in 1990, when Sega commissioned its AM8 production team to create a game with a mascot for the company. After considering several suggestions, they chose a blue hedgehog with spikes along its head and spine and renamed themselves "Sonic Team" to match the character. Sonic the Hedgehog, designed for fast gameplay, was influenced by the Super Mario games created by Shigeru Miyamoto. The game uses an innovative technique that allows Sonic's sprite to roll along a curved backdrop, originating from a demo created by programmer Yuji Naka. The song was composed by Masato Nakamura of the J-pop band Dreams Come True.

The game was well received by critics, being considered one of the best in history, with praise given to its visual effects, audio and gameplay. Furthermore, it was commercially successful, establishing the Genesis/Mega Drive as one of the key consoles of the 16-bit era, allowing it to compete with Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game also received several ports and inspired the creation of several clones, spawning a successful franchise in the following years, as well as adaptations for other media.
