Harnwell: A British Coronation is a church liturgy — it’s an explicitly Christian service

The focal point of the Coronation isn’t the actual crowning. That’s just the political and symbolic recognition of what immediately precedes it — the Anointing. And in its unchanged elements, the anointing liturgy itself is a thousand year old ceremony drawn directly from the Old Testament — from a time when it would have seemed absurd to suggest earthly authority could come from any place other than God.
