The NYC Subway Incident - What Are the Legal Constraints for Self-Defense?

The death of mentally ill Jordan Neely has created a polarizing response from the public. The Left say he was lynched, and the Right say the actions by the bystanders were justified. While certainly lynching is hyperbolic and inaccurate, are conservatives 100% correct that the action was legal and justified?
