It's important to educate parents and caregivers about the risks associated with leaving children in hot cars, even for just a few minutes. Many people may not realize how quickly the temperature inside a car can rise, even with the windows cracked. In fact, the temperature inside a car can rise by 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes, and by 40 degrees in an hour, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Parents and caregivers should be encouraged to never leave a child alone in a car, even if it's just for a quick errand. Instead, they should bring the child with them or find alternate arrangements. In addition, they should always lock their cars when not in use, to prevent curious children from accidentally getting inside and becoming trapped.

If someone does accidentally leave a child in a car, they should call 911 immediately and try to cool the child down as quickly as possible by moving them to a cool, shaded area and providing them with water.
