Date – Thursday, May 4th - 2023 – St. Angelus of Jerusalem

St. Angelus of Jerusalem, born in 1185, was a Carmelite and a son of converted Jewish parents. He combated heresies like the Pataria, the Albigensians, and the Bulgars, and had a great devotion to St. Francis of Assisi. St. Angelus met St. Francis in Rome in 1219 and told him of his coming martyrdom. He was murdered by the Cathar Count Berenger in Leocadia after publicly censuring him for living incestuously with his sister.

St. Angelus is best known for the famous encounter of three saints in a sacristy in Rome. St. Dominic, St. Francis, and St. Angelus met and each one understood who the other was by divine inspiration. The three knelt and conversed on their knees, and the beauty of their encounter lies in the fact that each one venerated the others.

St. Angelus' martyrdom was similar to that of Jesus Christ as he was killed by an enemy of the Church. He died saying the same words that Jesus Christ did on the Cross: "Into Thy hands I commend My Spirit."

St. Angelus of Jerusalem, Pray for us.

Oremus:
O GOD, Who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
