Date – Friday, May 5th - 2023 – Pope St. Pius V

Pope St. Pius V, whose feast day is on May 5, was a champion of the Catholic Faith and defender of Christendom. He ruled the Church during the 16th century when the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, were stationed in Malta, a strategic position in the Mediterranean against Muslim forces. As the Ottoman Empire prepared to attack the island, the Pope wrote to King Philip II of Spain, addressing him as "Our Most Dear Son in Christ, Philip II, Catholic King" and urging him to assist the Knights of Malta. The Pope's letter shows his respect for and trust in the king's Catholic faith, as well as his recognition of the importance of temporal power in defending the Church.

In addressing the King of Spain as his son, St. Pius V exemplified the close relationship between the Church and temporal rulers in those times. He believed that the Catholic Faith and Christendom itself were threatened by the Ottoman Empire, and that all Catholics should come to the aid of those defending Malta. St. Pius V's letter to King Philip II shows the practical application of his faith, as well as his deep concern for the welfare of the Church and all of Christendom. He remains a model for Catholics and political leaders alike, reminding us of the importance of defending the Faith and of the unity between the Church and the temporal sphere.
