Normally, a single lion - even a pride of lions - wouldn't dream of taking on an adult hippo in the prime of its life. Even if the reward is great, the risks far outweigh any perceived benefits. Hippos, especially those in their prime, are too hot-headed and life-threatening to be worth the effort required to bring them down.
