Former US Attorney General STUNS Senator, Argues Friendships Are More Important Than Judicial Ethics

During Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Supreme Court ethics, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) asked former Attorney General Michael Mukase if he would have accepted private jet travel from billionaire Harlan Crow if he were a judge.

Mukasey said that he was not sure whether he would have refused the offer. "If I were a district judge and someone wanted to fly me on his private plane on a vacation with my family, I were friendly with that person, would I have refused and endangered the friendship? I'm not sure that I would've," Mukasey said. Mukasey's comments come amid scrutiny of Justice Clarence Thomas's financial ties to Crow.

A recent ProPublica report found that Thomas and his wife, Ginni, have accepted lavish vacations and other gifts from Crow over the past two decades. The report also found that Crow's companies purchased three properties from the Thomases for more than $100,000, but that Thomas did not disclose these transactions on his financial disclosure forms.
Thomas has defended his relationship with Crow, saying that it is purely social.

However, the report has raised questions about whether Thomas has created the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Mukasey's comments suggest that even judges who are not accused of any wrongdoing may be tempted to accept gifts from wealthy individuals.
This is a concern because it could lead to judges being influenced by their personal relationships, rather than by the law.
