‘Big’ Ben told us in this post fight interview he regarded Copeland as tough as hell. The former UFC veteran said he’s hit big, bad men with way less and dropped them. Rothwell was clearly impressed by Copeland’s ability to take a shot and stay pursuant. Rothwell felt he and Copeland engaged in a brutal heavyweight war that gave all the pay-per-view buyers their money’s worth.

The fluidity of Rothwell’s clinch work clearly paid dividends as he built momentum through the second stanza of the fight until the end. When discussing that facet of his bare-knuckle fighting game, Rothwell quipped,

“Yeah, it’s kind of cool to show it. I believe in my MMA career I didn’t show how dominating my clinch can be. In this, it’s a huge weapon for me. My team has been begging and waiting for me to finally just really show my clinch work. I had a really extremely tough opponent in Josh Copeland.
Hats off to him.”

“It takes two to tango like that to make a war. He was able to; I was really able to find a lot of things out about myself with the bare-knuckle and really push the limits. You know, he’s a big, tough dude that was coming at me and had a great first round. I was affected by a lot of things. I was, you know, I’m not from here.”

Rothwell is from Wisconsin and came for a month to train out in Colorado but still got affected by the elevation. In talking about dealing with those dynamics, Rothwell stated,

“First round, I was super sluggish. Then I got into my groove in the second round and he started to see me get more into my work. Then third round, I think I really started putting the clinch on. It’s one of my assets, especially against a shorter guy like that, but I’ll use it against any height.”
Those adjustments to a different body type could be evident if Rothwell gets his desired next fight which is a clash against reigning BKFC heavyweight champion Alan Belcher.

To that point, Rothwell said the champ is crying and discussed the politics that could be at play with getting a bid at the heavyweight title next. In any event, the now 2-0 BKFC fighter will have a ton of focus on his next bout; whoever that may be.
