Rockport Kite Festival 2023 - As Seen From the Ground, Because Winds Were Gusting To 35mph #kites

The 2023 Annual Rockport Kite Festival got underway on Saturday, April 29th, with more winds than the kite flyers would have preferred. The morning started off in the 15mph-20mph, just at the upper range for the larger kites to fly safely, or my drones for that matter.

As the day progressed and the crowd grew larger, the wind speeds picked up to the point where they were gusting to 35mph or more. None of the really big kites could handle this wind speed and we chose not to risk flying our drone any further.

In fact, the wind gusts became so violent that they caused the tent canopy on our pop-up tent to get spiked on the center pole, collapsing onto the frame.

This video isn't up to our usual quality standards because we used a regular camera (that didn't have built-in image stabilization) to try and capture a sense of what was happening during the event. Toward the end of this video, even the tiny white & grey self propelled kites were having problems flying in the wind.
