Confidence is Doing Your Best

The ideal situation is to always be answering "yes" to the question "Am I doing my best?" But human experience doesn't match ideals. Often times we are held back from doing our best by things beyond our control, and we can even purposely decide to not do our best.

It is not the ability to answer this question in the affirmative all the time; it is the ability to answer confidently -- whether the answer is yes, no, or I don't know. Yes, even being able to confidently assert that we don't know if we're doing our best. The ability to stomach uncertainty, even (or especially) about ourselves, is a skill we must practice.

It is the ability to be honest with ourselves, which requires quite a degree of self-knowledge, which requires quite a degree of experience and mental wellness.
