Republican Says DeSantis Sabotaged His General Election Chances

In an interview with CBS's Margaret Brennan, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said that Gov. Ron DeSantis' 6-week abortion ban could hurt him in a general election. The Republican congresswoman said that the ban is "extreme" and "out of touch with the majority of Americans." Mace also said that the ban could alienate moderate and independent voters.

Brennan asked Mace if she thought a potential presidential candidate like DeSantis could succeed in a general election after signing such a ban. Mace said that it would be "very difficult" for DeSantis to win a general election if he is seen as "the person who signed the 6-week abortion ban."

Mace's comments come as DeSantis is considering a run for president in 2024. DeSantis is a popular figure among Republicans, but he is also a polarizing figure. The 6-week abortion ban is likely to be a major issue in the 2024 election, and it could hurt DeSantis' chances of winning if he is seen as too extreme on the issue.
