Jumpscares have become a staple in most horror games. They became more prevalent as visuals in games became more realistic. A lot of the older games like Monster Maze 3D (1980's) made it work because the jumpscares complimented the natural rhythm of the game. The Resident Evil and Silent Hill game series both evolved to introduce more over time, sometimes making the entire game about maintaining constant tension (Resident Evil 7).
