Many times, video game companies go ahead and change their systems halfway through a cycle life. Sometimes it's for the better, but it's almost always to remove features to reduce their cost of production. Some of these changes look and play great, while others leave you unfulfilled. Let's take a look at some of the best and worst console redesigns that manufacturers have put out there as we go about Ranking Original Video Game Console Designs vs Revisions

Original Super Nintendo versus Super Nintendo Jr
Winner: Super Nintendo Jr.
When Nintendo redesigned the Super Nintendo into the Junior, it eliminated a number of things. The eject button, component video, and a few other things. From a style standpoint, however, I still think that the Super Nintendo Jr looks better than the original system which is why it gets the nod here.

PlayStation 2 Fat versus PS2 Slim
Winner: PS2 Slim
I owned both systems back in the day, and both were okay, but I definitely prefer the overall look and performance of the PS2 Slim versus the original one. The slim took up a heck of a lot less space, was lighter, and I didn't necessarily care for the disc drawer on the original. I also felt the slim displayed standing up a lot more naturally than the fat.

Sega Master System Model 1 versus Model 2
Winner: Model 1
This is a perfect example of Sega making changes and not for the better, as the Model 1 Sega Master system had so much more styling to it. It was also more capable as well! The Model 2 couldn't play the Sega Card games, and they made it so the Model 2 only featured RF output. YUCK!

Original Xbox 360 versus version 3
Winner: version 3
Not only did Microsoft make the Xbox 360 considerably more reliable throughout its life cycle, but I think they also improved the overall looks and style. I was not a very big fan of the original Xbox 360 styling, and the revision looked a lot better to me.

Sega Genesis Model 1 versus Model 2
Winner: Model 1
Sega has had a weird history of redesigning their systems and making the revisions worse. The Model 2 Genesis does not look nearly as attractive as the original system. It just looks so uninspiring and blah! There was just something vastly superior about the looks and designs of the original Sega Genesis.

Atari 2600 Wood Grain vs Vader
Winner: Wood Grain
There's something just quintessentially 70's and 80's about the original Atari 2600, and it had such personality. The smaller, lighter, and cheaper Vader version just didn't have "it", no switches, no wood grain, it just lacked the classic looks and style of the original.

Launch version PlayStation 3 versus PS3 slim
Winner: PS3 Slim
Unlike Sega who continues to make their systems look worse with each revision, Sony has done a good job improving the looks and styles of their system from one generation to the next. The PS3 Slim was the first major design revision and simply looked a heck of a lot better than the original. It was smaller, more compact, and overall more reliable.
