He was the founder of the Congregation of the Little House of Divine Providence, commonly known as the Cottolengo Fathers, and the Sisters of Saint Joseph Benedict Cottolengo, also known as the Cottolengo Sisters.
Cottolengo was ordained as a priest in 1811 and began his ministry during a time of great social upheaval and poverty in Europe. He was deeply moved by the suffering he witnessed, especially among the marginalized and forgotten members of society. In response, he opened a shelter for the homeless and destitute in Turin, Italy, providing them with food, clothing, and shelter.
As his ministry expanded, Cottolengo founded numerous charitable institutions, including hospitals, orphanages, and schools, all dedicated to serving those in need. He was known for his tireless devotion to the sick and dying, often personally caring for patients and comforting them in their final moments.
One of Cottolengo's most significant contributions was his emphasis on treating each person with dignity and respect, regardless of their social status or condition. He believed in the inherent worth of every human being and worked tirelessly to alleviate their suffering and improve their quality of life.
Throughout his life, Cottolengo faced numerous challenges and setbacks, including financial difficulties and opposition from authorities. However, his unwavering faith and commitment to serving others sustained him through these trials.
Joseph Benedict Cottolengo died on April 30, 1842, in Chieri, Italy, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and selflessness. He was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1934, recognizing his heroic virtue and exemplary life of service to the poor and suffering.
