Federal ministers Marco Mendicino (public safety) and David Lametti (justice) are joined by their American counterparts Alejandro Mayorkas (U.S. secretary of homeland security) and Merrick Garland (U.S. attorney general) for an announcement in Ottawa. The news conference follows the conclusion of the 2023 Canada-United States Cross-Border Crime Forum. Minister Mendicino announces that a number of new or updated agreements have been reached between law enforcement agencies, with the goal of combating gun cross-border smuggling and trafficking. The two countries have also agreed to take more action to address the opioid crisis. Fighting human trafficking, anti-money laundering, countering foreign interference, and reforming the criminal justice system are among the other key priorities discussed at the forum.
