Starcraft 64 - Slay the Beast (How to Start)
the first half of the mission "To Slay the Beast" in starcraft 64.
This is a notorious difficult mission because of how rough the beginning is, so I made this video to help show a fairly effective strategy to remove the nearby starter threats and get a good amount of army/resources in the process.

Addressing my mistake in this Map. Nobody is perfect, and Even I, a veteran starcraft player, make mistakes... so I want to address where I messed up in this map. During my second big push towards white, I had assumed that 1 single spore colony was enough to "hold my base" but that was a lapse in logic on my part. I should have had 3-5 spore colonies in the top of my base instead. Because of that mistake, I lost all my devourers, which was a hefty sum of minerals and gas.
Spore Colonies and Sunkens should always be in at least groups of 3 or 5 minimum.
-Ideally, you start this map on the defensive, like most maps, and have to build up some ramparts in the top right and bottom right of your base to prevent the enemy from getting to your mineral line. Dark Templars and possibly a few burrowed zerglings can, for the most part, cover the top left exit. Hydras are extremely good early on as well, to support the defensive sunkens as additional damage behind them.
-
At the very start of the map, spreading overlords out is a must to make sure you don't select them with your other units, mutas and devourers are your "put out this fire" team, the hydras should relatively remain to defend the top area.
-
Start by making more drones, getting your resource game up, making sunkens and a few spores as well to handle any incoming threats. Start teching range attack and air attack, as well as building up to hive/greater spire. research burrow as well to help gain sight to know when/where the next attack is coming from with some buried zerglings. This helps to get your units where they need to be if a very large attack is spotted early.
-
by the time mid start rolls around you'll have endured several attacks, you should be making mutas now to get them ready for guardians. You should have at least 2 air attack, or researching level 2 air attack, hydra attack should be +2 or researching +3. Don't worry about defense upgrades yet. When you can, transform all your mutas into guardians. Mutas are worthless on this map for the most part. Make a group of hydras as well as backup. If things start to get dicey in the top left you can always build a few more sunkens to sure up the defense in that area. Build a single spore by your second base on the left to sure up it's defenses as well, to get any stragglers.
-
When you have enough troops (a solid group of guardians (10 or more) and a solid group of hydras (10 or more) you can commence an attack on either white or orange. Send the guardians in first to "attack move" unless you spot a turret or spore. Send the hydras to stand slightly behind the guardians... This is done intentionally for 2 reasons, to be able to select them quickly, and so that they can get into the fight immediately if the guardians get attacked by air units.
The hydras act as "cover" for the guardians, they are not meant to be fighters in the fight UNLESS air units show up, that's their one reason for existence.
-
As the guardians take out the base, don't get caught in the fight, but remember to watch the surroundings to make sure that no air units or nothing they can't handle comes into the fight. if you see something that can be a problem, order them back immediately, and advance the hydras to go under them. whatever the problem is will usually chase them, and the hydras will make quick work of it. If the problem is too big for the hydras, run the guardians away back to a safe zone (they are expensive units you don't want to lose), if the hydras take care of the problem, retreat the hydras back a ways and advance the guardians back into attack. This method of attack is devastatingly effective with relatively no cost of life or resources.
-
near the end of the video, I expanded my base outward, and was very low on minerals, however, I was in a good spot overall since I still had a decent amount of guardians and defenses/hydra forces. At that point it's about re-stocking and getting ready for the next advancement towards enemy lines.
