Hey guys, welcome back to our channel! In today’s video, we're going to take you to two amazing places: Dr John Champlin Glacier Park and Fort Griswold. These are both historical and natural attractions that you don’t want to miss.
First, we explore Dr John Champlin Glacier Park, which is a nature preserve with a 2.5 mile loop and smaller trails meandering through woodland with glacial erratic rocks and features from the ice age. There are signs throughout explaining the origin of many of the landscape features. It has two beautiful vernal pools, signs of a quarry from the past, and a viewpoint where you can see Block Island and the Long Island Sound. This park was donated to the Westerly Land Trust in 2004 by the estate of Dr Champlin, who was a famous doctor and businessman in the area.
Next, we visit the Fort Griswold, which is a former American defensive fortification in Groton, Connecticut named after Deputy Governor Matthew Griswold. The fort played a key role in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War, in correspondence with Fort Trumbull on the opposite side of the Thames River. It was the site of the largest Revolutionary War battle fought in Connecticut, where British troops under Benedict Arnold raided and burned New London and attacked the fort in the Battle of Groton Heights. The fort was rebuilt and manned in several other conflicts, but now it is maintained as a state park by the Friends of Fort Griswold. You can climb to the top of the monument and visit the museum to learn more about the history of the fort.
