‘Vigilante’ BUSTED For Multiple Assaults On Sleeping Homeless People

Don Carmignani, a former San Francisco fire commissioner, is facing multiple charges after he was caught on video spraying bear mace at least eight homeless people.

Carmignani, 53, was arrested on February 11, 2023, after police received multiple reports of a man spraying homeless people with bear mace. In one of the incidents, a man matching Carmignani's description was caught on video spraying a homeless man who was sleeping in a tent.

Carmignani was charged with eight counts of assault with a caustic chemical, four counts of battery, and one count of elder abuse. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 8, 2023.

The attacks have drawn outrage from homeless advocates, who say they are part of a larger trend of violence against homeless people in San Francisco. In 2022, there were 1,000 reported assaults on homeless people in the city, a 30% increase from the previous year.

The attacks have also raised questions about the city's response to homelessness. San Francisco has been criticized for its lack of affordable housing and its harsh treatment of homeless people. In 2021, the city's Department of Public Works was caught destroying homeless encampments without warning.

The arrest of Carmignani is a small victory for homeless advocates, but they say more needs to be done to address the root causes of homelessness and to protect homeless people from violence.
