Jerry Springer, the talk show host and former mayor of Cincinnati, has died at the age of 79 after a brief illness. His death was confirmed by his longtime publicist, Linda Shafran, who said he died Thursday at his home in suburban Chicago1. Jene Galvin, a lifelong friend and spokesman for the family, said Springer died specifically from pancreatic cancer23.

Springer was best known for The Jerry Springer Show, which ran for 27 seasons and featured guests revealing shocking, often sordid details of their lives (cheating spouses, love triangles, incest). Fights were not uncommon on the show, with the audience often erupting into cheers of “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!” Springer’s style of confrontational and sensational television influenced many other shows in the genre, such as Maury Povich and Steve Wilkos.

Springer was born in London during World War II to Jewish parents who fled Nazi Germany. He came to New York with his family as a child and later graduated from Tulane University and Northwestern University School of Law. He began his career as a political campaign adviser and then ran for office himself. He was elected to Cincinnati’s city council in 1971 and served as mayor from 1977 to 1978. He also worked as a news anchor and commentator for WLWT-TV.

Springer launched his talk show in 1991 and initially focused on serious topics such as homelessness, gun control and racism. However, he soon shifted to more sensational and controversial topics to boost ratings and compete with other shows. The Jerry Springer Show became a cultural phenomenon and a subject of parody and criticism. Springer defended his show as a form of entertainment and said he did not judge his guests or their choices.
