Date – Thursday, April 27th - 2023 – Pope St. Marcellinus

Pope Marcellinus ruled the Church of Rome for 9 years and 4 months. But under the orders of Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, he was taken prisoner and forced to offer sacrifice to idols. At first, he refused and was threatened with torture, but in fear, he ultimately made a sacrifice to the gods, causing immense sadness among the faithful.

Members of the church reproached him severely, and he realized his error, offering himself to be judged by a council of Bishops. The Bishops stated that the Supreme Pontiff cannot be judged by anyone, but he could weigh his own case and pronounce his own judgment. Pope Marcellinus deposed himself, but the whole gathering immediately re-elected him.

The Emperors had him arrested again, but he refused to make a sacrifice to the idols and was sentenced to be beheaded. This led to a renewed persecution where 17,000 Christians were put to death in one month.

When Marcellinus was about to be beheaded, he declared himself unworthy of Christian burial, and no one dared to bury him. His body lay above ground for 35 days until Apostle Peter appeared to Marcellus, the Pope who succeeded Marcellinus, and instructed him to bury Marcellinus at his feet. Marcellus obeyed, and the curse was lifted.
