Two men, Lu Jianwang and Chen Jinping, both New York City residents, have been arrested by US prosecutors in New York for allegedly running a Chinese "secret police station" in Manhattan's Chinatown neighbourhood. The men face charges of conspiring to act as agents for China and obstruction of justice. China has previously denied operating such stations, calling them "service centres" for nationals overseas. The station was closed in the autumn of 2022, after those involved became aware of an FBI investigation into the station. This is believed to be among at least 100 such stations operating across the globe in 53 countries, including the UK and the Netherlands. If convicted, both men face up to 25 years in prison.
