On an early fall day in Montana's Madison Valley, Todd Orr, a trail engineer and knife maker, set out on a hike to scout for elk. However, he encountered a sow grizzly and her two cubs, and the protective mother charged him from about 40 yards away. Despite using his bear spray, the grizzly charged through the orange cloud and mauled him, biting and tearing into his arms, shoulders, and back. Todd managed to protect his head and neck during the attack and survived by using his bear spray and pistol to deter the bear. He then began to make his way back to the trailhead, hoping to put as much distance as possible between himself and the grizzly.

However, just as he began to feel safe, the grizzly reappeared and charged him again, brutally mauling him for a second time. The weight of the enormous creature was crushing, and Todd could feel the grizzly's teeth sinking deep into his flesh with each bite. He heard the crunch of bone breaking in his left forearm and was convinced that he would not survive this ordeal.

After the grizzly finally left, Todd managed to make it back to his truck and drove to the hospital. His injuries, including a broken ulna bone, deep puncture wounds, and a five-inch gash on the side of his head, took six hours to stitch closed. Todd's left forearm required surgery to repair the severed tendons and shredded muscle.
