Confession: For a long time I had a romantic illusion about Singapore. I don't know why. The first time I was there I was fascinated. The second time it felt like I came home. However, in the truest demonstration of familiarity breeding contempt, the magic of Singapore wore off after the third or fourth visit. I saw behind the veil.
Singapore still has, although I couldn't define it then, a colonial countenance, and a kind of social hierarchy that almost feels, in retrospect, like a caste system.
Romances with humans can be very much like romances with places. I had the same stormy relationship with Southern California and I can easily transmigrate those disappointments to women I've known.
Note: if we ever get desperate we can fall back on "Relationship Podcasts". There will always be a market for those. Ha ha.
