Why were ultra-megaliths used in the construction of Baalbek's Temple of Jupiter?

The Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek, Lebanon is made of stones of varying size, including a few of the largest carved stones in the world. It's a mystery how they moved the stones into position. Many people question how the Romans or an earlier civilization could have done it. But what was even the point of using stones so large in the first place?
