Concrete Arrows hundreds of massive concrete arrows were discovered in an American desert in 2013. Today the domes lie empty in the desert south of Phoenix. For a very long time no one knew the purpose the arrows served until a young couple, Brian and Charlotte Smith, thoroughly investigated them. The couple found out that the arrows were created to guide male pilots in the 1920s. They were constructed as transcontinental airway systems between 1923 and 1934. They connected the Atlantic and Pacific coasts in 1924 and reached a total of 1,500 beacons and 18,000 miles of routes in 1933. They were built as an alternative to satellites and GPS that are used in modern times. Back then the arrows were illuminated by neighboring beacons. The beacons were 25 miles apart from one another and the arrows were painted yellow. But now some of the beacons have been overgrown by grass while most of the light towers are gone and the paint on most of the remaining indicators has now faded, making the arrows lie abandoned.
