What Can We Really Believe or Trust?

In today’s society, what can we really believe or trust? There’s a prevalence of trickery and coercion in what we read, see and hear. This prevalence is largely due to social media and the ease at which information can reach millions of people in a blink of an eye. Some automatically believe anything and go along with the crowd. Some will dig deeper to find out whether something is true or if it is the right thing to side with. Some just ignore it all together.

That’s the secular world. What about the religious or Christian world? Isn’t it just as fallible? We are all human. We all make mistakes. We all can be lead astray. This includes church leaders. So, as Christians, what are we to do? How do we determine what is true and what is correct? How do we guard ourselves from being lead astray in beliefs or viewpoints or worldly issues?

God’s word tells us to seek wisdom. Proverbs 4:5-7 tells us,

“Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”

Where do we get this wisdom and understanding? We get it by asking God for direction.

We read in Proverbs 2:3-6,
“if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand reverence of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

When we seek God for knowledge, wisdom and understanding, He will provide it and guide you on the right path as Isaiah 48:17 tells us:

“I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”

Not only should we ask God for assistance, but we should turn to His Word, the bible. Scripture is the written source of wisdom and truth from Genesis to Revelation as Apostle Paul tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17,

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped.”

So...as we navigate through everything we read, see and hear...and wonder what we really can believe or trust... let us remember to turn to God for wisdom and understanding so we are not lead astray. Let us remember to use scripture, the true, infallible word of God, as a tool of guidance. And let us remember that we are not alone… we have the Holy Spirit guiding us and teaching us as we read in John 14:26,

“...the Holy Spirit will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
