India successfully conducted a maiden flight trial of a sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile on April 21, marking a significant milestone in the country's defense capabilities. The missile was tested off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal, and the purpose of the trial was to engage and neutralize a hostile ballistic missile threat. With this achievement, India has elevated itself into an elite club of nations having naval ballistic missile defense capability.

Prior to this, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully demonstrated a land-based Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system with the capability to neutralize ballistic missile threats. These missiles can emerge from adversaries, making India's BMD capabilities even more vital.

The successful trial of the sea-based missile has been applauded by the Indian defense establishment, including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who congratulated DRDO, Indian Navy, and the industry involved in the successful demonstration of ship-based BMD capabilities. Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO, Samir V Kamat, complimented the teams involved in the design and development of the missile, saying that the nation has achieved self-reliance in developing highly-complex network-centric anti-ballistic missile systems.
